The History of the 1466 Hiker Micro Crew Sock

Have you ever considered what items you might want if you were stranded on a deserted island? Chances are, if you asked our staff or any thru hiker that question, they would respond with, “a pair of 1466.” This sock has earned a reputation over the years… showing up mile after mile to become our best-selling Hike sock.

Some socks are just socks. And then there's the 1466, our Hiker Micro Crew Midweight with Cushion. This sock put us on the map.

If you've worn Darn Tough long enough, you may already know the style number. It’s one of the last of the 1400s (along with the 1403, 1405, and 1437), the original sock style numbering system from the early days at Darn Tough Vermont. It's the style number given to our best-selling Hiker Micro Crew — the sock that's been along for more summits, thru hikes, and every day wear than we can count.

This is the story of how the 1466 came to be.

2004: Before 1466

Every sock company has a first sock. Ours was a Run Quarter. Our first Hike-specific sock was also a Quarter — short, simple, knit for the trail.

From there we knit a Hiker Boot sock, going taller for those who wanted more coverage to pair with a traditional hiking boot. Both heights are still in the Hike lineup today because they work. There’s a purpose for them on the trail.

But we noticed a problem. The Hiker Quarter felt too low. The Boot felt too tall. There was a gap in the middle nobody had filled, and the hikers among us wanted something in between. So, in 2007 we invented a new sock height: the Micro Crew.

2007: We Invent the Hiker Micro Crew

The 1466 Hiker was the first sock to sport our new Micro Crew height. Not too short, not too tall. The sweet spot between a Quarter and a Boot sock, made for thru-hikers, day hikers, and anyone who wanted trail-ready coverage without extra bulk.

The Micro Crew height wasn't just a new height for Darn Tough. It was a new height, period. The 1466 introduced this height to the entire sock industry and the hiking community. Safe to say people liked it:

If there’s one sock that most contributed to our success in Hike, it’s this one. In those initial knit runs, the 1466 was a unisex style, but it wasn’t long before we launched the 1903 – the same sock, but knit in women’s-specific sizing.

Nearly two decades later, this sock hasn’t changed much. Darn Tough’s Product Line Manager and resident thru-hiker, Owen Rachampbell, has put thousands of miles on the 1466. He hiked the Appalachian Trail in two pairs, wearing them through 15-degree nights and over 90-degree humid days. He has some thoughts on why this sock has stood the test of time:

Recognition Treks in

Word travels fast on the trail, and it wasn't long before the outdoor press started noticing. The Hiker Micro Crew picked up early recognition from testers and reviewers who put it through real miles.

Since 2021, our 1466 sock has accumulated 101 “Best Hiking Sock” awards. It holds the world record for most consecutive days worn without washing at 101 days. And it’s earned 15,000 five-star reviews and counting. This review came in the other day:

“I have never had a better pair of socks. I have worn them in -30°F temps to 110°F days and have never had an issue with the same pairs of hiking socks in both environments, and everything in between with the right boots of course. After 8 years, I finally wore a small hole in my first pair (and I have many sets); but the warranty process was easy and I got my new socks fast. Safe to say, we’re proud of this sock – so the awards feel good. But it’s stories like Steve’s, from the people who wear this sock year after year, that mean the most.

2019: Built Even Better

Like we mentioned, the 1466 hasn't changed much over the years. And that's mostly the point. With 47 years in the sock-making business, we like to get it right the first time around whenever we can.

But "hasn't changed much" doesn't mean "never improved." We have yet to produce our best sock.

In 2019, we made this best seller even more durable using insights from our warranty program. After reviewing thousands of warranty claims, we noticed similar wear patterns appearing again and again. So we reinforced those zones, making our long-lasting sock even more durable.

2026: Best Overall, Again

Our goal has always been the same: knit the best hiking socks we know how.

This year, GearJunkie named the 1466 Hiker Micro Crew its Best Overall hiking sock of 2026. It's the latest addition to a shelf that's gotten fairly crowded over the years. Not bad for a sock that started as a simple idea to fill a gap between a Quarter and a Boot.

The Sock Gets Its Own Holiday: 1466 Day

Eventually, we figured a sock with this kind of history deserved more than just a style number — it deserved a day to celebrate. A day where we get on trail with the Hike community that embraced this sock — and us.

So, we made one up. Yep. In 2007 we invented a sock height. In 2024 we invented a holiday: 1466 Day.

Is creating a holiday for a sock ridiculous? Probably.

Did we do it anyway? Absolutely.

1466 Day falls on the third Thursday of September. This year, that’s September 17th. Mark your calendar, dig out your Hiker Micro Crews, and hit the trail. We’ll be out on Vermont’s most iconic mountains handing out free pairs of our most beloved Hike sock.
