What Is 1466 Day? Everything You Need to Know

Two hikers standing on top of a mountain peak wearing Darn Tough's best selling hike socks, the 1466 and 1903.

Why did we make our own holiday? Because it’s iconic. And we love doing iconic sh-tuff. Like the 1466. An iconic sock that deserves a day of recognition.

And that’s why 1466 Day was born.

The third Thursday of September is 1466 Day, our own made-up holiday that celebrates the Hiker Micro Crew, a sock that became a trail icon, a customer favorite, and our best-selling hiking sock. It’s a day to celebrate the sock, the people who have worn it for thousands of miles, and the many trails it’s crossed along the way.

So, why 1466 Day? Why does a sock need a holiday? What makes this particular pair such a big deal? And… is there cake?

Here’s everything you need to know about 1466 Day.

What Is 1466 Day?

Darn Tough 1466 Day patch on a tree.

1466 Day is an annual celebration of Darn Tough’s iconic Hiker Micro Crew sock and what’s made it iconic: our community. It takes place on the third Thursday of September every year. This year, 2026, will be our 4th annual celebration. Just imagine in 16 years how cool it will be to be able to say, it's our 20th Annual.... Hey, everyone’s gotta start somewhere.

The holiday started as a simple idea: if one sock has spent decades earning its place in hikers’ packs, it deserves a day of its own. As much for itself as for the people who have bought it, worn it, re-worn, loved it, and shouted from the mountain tops about it.

This holiday is secretly a celebration of you, the people who have brought the 1466 to #1 Hike Sock status. Because without our community, it’s just a hiking sock.

And because it’s a Darn Tough holiday, the celebration isn’t exactly traditional. Depending on the year, 1466 Day might include limited-edition colorways, giveaways, trailhead surprises, community events, stories, or other ways to celebrate the 1466.

But the spirit of the day is always the same: get outside. Go for a walk, a hike (after all, the 1466 is a hiking sock), or do whatever your favorite outdoor activity to do in socks is. Ideally in your 1466s. Even better, with your local community.

However you spend it, one thing never changes: 1466 Day is meant to be celebrated outside and together. We’ll be hiking all over Vermont, and various other states, so no matter where you are, we will be out there with you, celebrating together.

When Is 1466 Day?

1466 Day falls on the third Thursday of September every year. Thanksgiving style.

The exact date changes from year to year, but the day stays the same. Go ahead and put a recurring event in your calendar now.

Why Is It Called 1466 Day?

Hiker wearing the 1466 hiker micro crew in color Denim walking over a muddy trail.

Because 1466 is the style number of the sock at the center of it all: the Darn Tough Hiker Micro Crew Midweight with Cushion, if we’re getting specific.

The 1466 has been around since the early days of Darn Tough's Micro Crew height, because it was the first sock in this height class. First introduced in 2007, the Micro Crew established a new sock height that landed somewhere between a traditional crew and a quarter-height hiking sock. It turned out to be a particularly good fit for hikers — and it stuck. This sock isn’t just any other sock; it’s the first of its kind.

The sock has evolved over the years, but its essential formula has remained remarkably consistent: a midweight Merino Wool hiking sock, Micro Crew height, cushioning, and a performance fit built for miles on the trail.

Eventually, the style number 1466 became about more than a product code. For hikers and Darn Tough customers, it became shorthand for one of our most recognizable socks.

But… Why Celebrate 1466 Day?

Because the 1466 helped define Darn Tough.

In its nearly 20 years of existence, the Hiker Micro Crew became a go-to sock for hikers, backpackers, and thru-hikers who needed something that could keep up with serious (and non-serious) miles. It has traveled from local Vermont trails to long-distance routes like the Appalachian Trail and Pacific Crest Trail.

It also represents something bigger about Darn Tough: making socks in Vermont, building them to last, listening to the people who wear them, and continuing to improve a product without losing what made it work in the first place. Your feedback, from miles of wear and years of love, is what drives us to continue churning out the best 1466.

We believe We Have Yet to Produce Our Best Sock, and that goes for the 1466. We keep working on improving because we always want to be #1 in your hiking boots and #1 in your hearts.

In other words, 1466 Day isn't just about a sock.

It's about the people who have worn it, the places they've taken it, and the product history that came together to make the 1466 an icon. Altogether, that seemed like a pretty good reason to celebrate.

A Holiday Though? For a Sock?

Hey, this sock earned it.

The Hiker Micro Crew is our most popular hiking sock, let alone our most popular sock period, and it has developed a following that goes well beyond the product page. Hikers have worn it for thousands of miles, recommended it to fellow hikers, and come back for another pair when it was time to hit the trail again. Not because they need to (Lifetime Guarantee and all), but because they love it that much.

The 1466 has become one of those products that people know by style number. The community has rallied around this sock, and we wanted to rally around the community who has been with us every step of the way. We know that’s unusual for a sock. So, we made a holiday for it.

Talk to Me About the 1466

The 1466 is the style number for Darn Tough’s Hiker Micro Crew Midweight with Cushion in Men’s sizing. But it has a partner in crime: the 1903 is the Women’s version of this sock. All the same features, just slightly different measurements and different colors.

Both versions are made with Merino Wool and designed specifically for hiking. They come in the legendary Micro Crew height, with midweight construction and cushioning underfoot and in targeted areas around the foot.

They’re also built with Darn Tough’s Performance Fit, designed to help prevent slipping, bunching, and blisters.

And, like every pair of Darn Tough socks, they’re Unconditionally Guaranteed for Life. Have we made you curious about this beloved sock yet? Check it out for yourself, shop the 1466 and 1903.

What Makes the 1466 Different from Other Hiking Socks?

The 1466 brings together several features that are especially useful on the trail.

  • Merino Wool: Naturally helps manage moisture, regulate temperature, and resist odors.
  • Midweight construction: Substantial enough for hiking without being limited to cold-weather use. It’s the perfect all-season sock.
  • Cushioning: Terry loops provide cushioning underfoot and targeted protection around areas that take a beating on the trail.
  • Micro Crew height: Tall enough to work well with hiking shoes and boots, without the extra height of a traditional boot sock.
  • Performance Fit: Designed to stay put without slipping or bunching.

But the product specs only tell part of the story. There’s the part that's harder to put on a spec sheet: decades of real-world use.

The 1466 has been tested the old-fashioned way: by hikers actually wearing it. Over the years, it has logged miles on trails around the country and around the world, earning a reputation for comfort, durability, and fit along the way.

That kind of reputation takes time. The 1466 has had plenty of it.

Built for the Trail, Known Everywhere

The 1466 was made for hiking, plain and simple. It works well with hiking shoes, hiking boots, and backpacking boots, making it a versatile choice for everything from day hikes to longer treks.

It has also seamlessly made its way into everyday wardrobes. People love the 1466 so much they wear it casually, not just on the trail. Its midweight Merino Wool construction makes it an all-season option, so you don’t have to put it away when summer ends.

In short: it’s built to go wherever your feet go.

That versatility, and the way it performs once it gets there, is a big reason the 1466 has become Darn Tough’s best-known hiking sock. Over time, the product became more than a style number. It became the 1466.

And the recognition backs it up: the 1466 has earned 101 “Best Hiking Sock” awards and counting. So many, we ran out of fridge space.

Is It Clocking for You?

We’re sock nerds. We could go on forever talking about this sock and what makes it so special. Oh, wait…we already did: The History of the 1466.

But you came here for something different, the holiday of it all.

Throwing a party didn’t feel quite right. If the 1466 could talk, it'd tell us what kind of holiday it wanted, we have a feeling it would say, “Party? I want to hike.”

So, to honor what we’re pretty sure would be its wishes, that’s exactly what we’re doing. 1466 Day is a big ol' hiking party. If you’re going to throw a holiday for a hiking sock, you might as well celebrate the way the sock would want.

How Can I Participate in 1466 Day?

There isn't one right way to celebrate. As long as you're outside, you're doing it right. Heck, we'll even consider daydreaming about being outside as participation.

We have other activations cookin' too. 1466 Day activities may include limited edition colors, giveaways, trailhead events, community gatherings, special content, or other surprises.

Like, for instance, say you were out on a hike... on the third Thursday of September... and you happen to see someone who is a Darn Tough employee on that same trail... and they happen to have an extra pair of socks... that they just so happen to give to you...

We mean, hypothetically, that could be one way to celebrate.

You can also celebrate the original way: put on your 1466s (or 1903s) and go for a hike. Preferably somewhere with a view.

So, basically, if it involves being outside, wearing socks, and having a good time, we’re counting it. But we know that’s not all you want to know. You’ve got questions. We’ve got answers. Some of them are even important.

Absolutely not. The 1466 was built for hiking, but it's just as happy on a neighborhood walk, a camping trip, a road trip, or wherever else your feet take you.

That's what we're celebrating. The sock. The hikers. The trails. And the fact that, somehow, a style number became a holiday. So, plan your out-of-office now, because we want to see you out there.
