How Many Days Can You Wear a Sock Before It’s Gross?

You know the kind of jokes that aren’t really jokes? Well, we’ve always joked around that that you don’t need to wash Darn Tough socks.

In fact, we do encourage washing, but not all the time, not after every wear. Because of Merino Wool’s natural properties like odor resistance and moisture management, you can totally go more than one wear between washes — it’s actually better for the longevity of those magical Merino fibers.

Thing is, in celebrating the many talents of Merino Wool, we seem to have opened a Pandora’s box (or maybe Pandora’s sock drawer).

It started small — a week, two weeks. But we started hearing stories of people going long stretches in a single pair of socks without washing.

Which meant it was time to begin…

The No-Wash Challenge Hall of Fame

Yep, it’s a thing. And it’s 100% ongoing, so if you want to take up the challenge, be our guest. All it takes is a pair of socks and a little documentation to prove you went the distance: you wore that same pair of socks every day, without washing them.

There is a potential strategy to consider: midweight and heavyweight socks have more Merino Wool content, which means more anti-stink properties (and a little more material to take on the challenges of daily wear).

Whichever sock you choose, here’s who you’re up against:

The Baseline: 30 Days

Darn Tough founder and owner Ric Cabot is known to test new sock styles for 30-straight days, so that’s the bar. Going a month in a pair of socks is nothing to scoff at, but it’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Lance Pitcher – 40 Days

The first official record holder, an employee named Lance took on the challenge to top Ric’s test and went 40 days in one pair of unwashed socks during the COVID lockdown.

During the push, we posted reports. One such:

“Day 8, same socks: once you put them back on and start moving around, it’s all good.”

Adam Jaber – 55 Days

In a 2023 celebratory blog post, Adam proclaimed, “I am a World Record Holder.” And for a couple years, he was right.

Even with Merino Wool’s anti-microbial odor resistance, 55 days (just shy of 8 weeks) is a bold move. Adam made it past the phase where the socks start to mold to your feet and kept on going. It would be another two years until a challenger would rise to meet him.

Which brings us to the current record holder.

Desmond Tse – 101 Days

The year is 2026. A siding installer from Alberta, Canada, sends in an email claiming that he’s on day 54, about to break the current World Record. In that time, he ran over 93 miles, did an 8 mile hike, and worked week after week — all in the same pair of unwashed Darn Tough socks. And he had the daily video checks to back it up.

Desmond’s reports continued to roll in: 61 days, 75 days, “…and I even went for a 6km run this morning!”

His next report read:

“It is day 84 today. For now, it looks like my end date will be Aug 10 - which would put me at 101 days if I succeed. I will most likely not be able to continue wearing them after that because I’m registered for a Spartan race that day which requires crawling through water/mud under wire at some points of the race. They will be soaked and very dirty after the race.”

After 101 days, Desmond’s pair of Men's Hiker socks certainly looked like they’d spent a third of a year in the line of duty.

So, How Long Really Is Too Long?

Just to be clear: our official recommendation is to go a few wears between washes. If “a couple” is two, then “a few” could be three to five. You’re good.

And when it comes time to wash, we do have some handy instructions on how to best care for your Merino Wool socks to increase their longevity and freshness.

And if you stretch wear beyond a few, as the record breakers have proven one can, you’re still good to go. Sure, you’ll start to notice some things:

  • First week: The only thing you’ll notice will likely be a slight edginess as that freshly-cleaned-sock softness wears off. Wear them for a minute, and they’ll feel totally normal.
  • Two weeks: You won’t see much change. Yeah, it’s wild.
  • Three weeks: The socks will be noticeably formed to your feet. You’ll be able to tell if you wore them on the opposite feet the day before. But again, wear them for a minute, and they’ll fit like a glove. Notice the trend: these high density knit Merino Wool fibers do not lose their fit.
  • Four weeks: At this point, even the most odor-resistant materials are fighting an uphill battle. But every record holder has reported that while there is a musk, it isn’t overwhelming. That alone is impressive given the fact that if you’ve come this far, you’re probably also sending it in other aspects of your life (running, hiking, long dog-walks in the rain).
  • Five weeks: At this point, we feel ok saying that unless you’re actively trying to set a world record, you should wash your socks. Your roommates, partner, close relatives, and coworkers might thank you.
  • Six weeks (and beyond): All that said, Desmond Tse and his partner Caley both confirmed that even up to 101 days in the same pair of unwashed socks the smell did not become a problem. And that’s with over 200 miles of running, hiking, working, travel…

So, how many days is too many? It seems like the conclusion here is that it’s up to you.

But don’t just take our word for it. Like we said, beyond even the record-chasers, the stories are pouring in:

Four Days, One Pair — Still No Stink

“I put these socks on Wednesday morning for work and didn’t rotate them out until Saturday night. In between: full days on landscaping job sites, running, hiking, and operating heavy equipment in the mud. Sandals, work boots, tennis shoes—didn’t matter. Four straight days of hard use and they never stank, never bunched, never let my feet get sweaty or cold. Just cozy and comfortable the whole way through.

"I’m a landscaper by trade, so my boots aren’t for show — they get buried in mud for a living. I’ve put a lot of socks through this test, and most fail by day two. Darn Tough is the only brand I trust to keep up with how I actually live and work. Worth every penny, and the lifetime warranty means I’ll probably never buy another brand again.”

If You Hold It Right up to Your Nose…

“I spend 12-hour shifts on concrete in work boots all night and I wish I'd known about these socks years ago. They aren't too hot; the cushion has just enough give without being "squishy"; My feet aren't wet, and these socks aren't soaked like with my cotton socks (and they were higher end, fully cushioned, midweight work socks designed for the environment I am in. Not just a 6 pack of Hanes from Wal-Mart).

"Most importantly they do not stink. I cannot stress enough how much they do not stink. Previously taking off my work boot at night resulted in an olfactory onslaught. Like a dirty litter box a week past due for a cleaning. I'm not proud, it was embarrassing even when just in front of my family.

"The Darn Tough socks aren't completely odor free, but so far, I have tested 3 days with the same socks (36+ hours in a work boot) and the smell is that of a dirty sock, IF you hold it right up to your nose. Not even a bad dirty sock, like the way my 7-year old's sock smells after he's worn in for 4-5 hours. It's incredible."

Reducing the Amount of Laundry

"I decided to test them after reading several articles on the Darn Tough website. One article mentions only washing socks after 2-3 days of wearing them. My test was to get a pair of socks and wear them for 3-4 days and then wash them and continue wearing them. I did this for six months pretty much wearing the same pair of socks 95% of the time.

"I was pleasantly surprised. There was no noticeable smell when I put the socks on each morning after wearing them for a few days. They were definitely worn, but for being the sole pair of socks that I wore for 6 months they did really well. After this test I concluded that I'd be able to easily replace 9-12 pairs of socks with just 3 pairs of these Darn Tough socks. This will both reduce the amount of laundry I do as well as take up less space.

"My final thoughts on these socks are, they are durable, comfortable, and last well."

Your Move

So, the sock has been tossed. Can you beat 101 days? The data shows that you totally can. But do you dare?

If you do, just be sure to send us lots of notes and pictures along the way.
