Marmot Larceny, Scissors, and a Teeny Tiny Dress: Stories from the Darn Tough Mailbox

Oh, the places you goโ€ฆ Darn Tough socks have been around the world andย back, and inevitably experienced some unusual situations. Lucky for us, folks send us their stories all the time, so we get to follow along all the way from the Sock Capital of the World.

Our offices are covered in letters, photos, wedding invitations, and worn out socks. Every month we receive more and tack them up on the wall. So, letโ€™s pick out a few favorites from the last couple months.

When We Say โ€œUnconditionallyโ€ฆโ€

We could put it in big neon letters on Time Square, fly it around on a 100โ€™ banner behind an airplane โ€” we could even say it really slowly, โ€œun-con-di-shโ€ฆโ€ And people would still be surprised to learn that when we say our socks are Unconditionally Guaranteed for Life, we mean it.

Darn tough sock that came in through the darn tough warranty program with holes in it.

We may ask questions, but only because we want to hear your story. Like this one from Olivia, whose sock became an offering to the Barbie gods:

"My kid decided to make my fav pair into a Barbie dress๐Ÿ˜‚ - and they still offered to replace them!"

Yep, we covered that. Weโ€™re sure Barbie looked fabulous.

Darn Tough (to Cut Through)

You know you named your brand right when people say it all on their own without even knowing it. In the case of our name, it happens about as often as youโ€™d expect, like in the case of this skier who found a silver lining in an accidental play on words:

Darn Tough sock that customer was wearing when they broke their leg and had to cut through.

"Hi there, My name is Holly, and I have a story for you. I had just bought a few new pairs of Darn Tough ski socks and was out for my first day of the season on December 31st when I came upon a stream when I was almost to the bottom of a run. I had about a half-second to decide: jump or fall in. I chose to jump.

My left leg cleared it. My right ski drove into the bank โ€” and I broke both my tibia and fibula. When ski patrol arrived, he asked what happened and I gave him my best assessment (I'm a physician and former pro athlete, so I had a pretty good idea of what I'd done).

He wanted a better look, so I pulled up my ski pants โ€” and he immediately started trying to cut through my sock. After struggling for a moment, he looked up and said, "Wow, these are darn tough to cut through!" He wasn't expecting me to laugh. But I did. "That's actually what they're called," I told him. "The socks."

They left my boot on, splinted my leg, loaded me into a toboggan, and hauled me back up the mountain on the ski lift (up the back side of the mountain) before skiing beside me down to the base of Crystal Mountain. When they finally got the boot off, they had to finish cutting the sock. I made sure to explain the "Darn Tough" moment to the whole crew. Everyone got a good laugh. So, from a very satisfied โ€” if slightly broken โ€” customer: your socks really are aptly named. Warm regards, Holly."

Yeesh, sorry about your leg, Holly. At least your socks will definitely be covered under warranty.

Marmot at Large

We get plenty of stories about dogs eating socks, even the occasional bird making off with them, but this oneโ€™s a first.

"Stolen by marmot: I was on a mountaineering trip in the Pickets Range of the North Cascades, and after a long day of hiking and bushwhacking I had soaked through two pairs of socks, and left both to air out under an overhang next to my tent.

In the morning I awoke to find the crime scene with only 1 of 4 socks remaining, and a guilty looking marmot nearby.

Luckily I had one more pair of Darn Toughs handy for the rest of the trip. Not sure if marmot larceny counts for the warranty. No worries if not. The socks described are not included in this return, as I kept the one good one and the other three are keeping a marmot den warm. (They likely have at least one hole by now.)"

Yep, weโ€™d cover that. And honestly, weโ€™re happy to support the local marmot population with a little extra warmth on those chilly nights in the North Cascades. Of course, weโ€™d prefer to leave no trace, but at least in this case itโ€™s a few conveniently marmot-sized blankets.

No Substitute

The universe has a way of telling you that youโ€™re on the right track. In our case, we have a massive community of folks who not only run in our socks religiously, but who send us immediate feedback without us even asking for it. Like this message from Melanie.

"Howdy! Wanted to let your team know that for every day in the month of June Iโ€™ve been running 7 miles using my trusted darn toughs, and for whatever cosmic reason yesterday was the ultimate laundry day where no DTs were to be found, so I threw on a random offbrand sock (not thinking anything would change since my feet are athletic and tough), and Iโ€™m here to report that they immediately got blisters and I regret not dirt bagging my darn toughs! This is why you guys are the best."

Lesson learned: Accept no alternatives (or risk immediate blisters).

Work Doesnโ€™t Have to Stink

For folks who are on their feet all day, the boots and socks you choose make a huge difference in your day-to-day wellbeing. Just take it from Richard, who noticed such a difference he almost went all the way to joining the No Wash Challenge Hall of Fame. (Yep, itโ€™s a thing.)

"No more swamp foot! Picked up a couple pairs of these on a recommendation, and after 2 weeks, they're a game changer! Working outside I'd been wearing a cotton mix in my sneakers & low top safety toe shoes and it'd been like a sauna in there.

These socks are completely different, as they breathe, even in the safety toes, and I'm not dealing with damp feet even on hot and humid days. After reading the article about the 30 Day Challenge, I stretched a single wear to 3 days and they weren't crusty or stinky at all (I wasn't going to try for the full 30). Definitely will be getting a few more low pairs for summer and some crew socks for the fall hiking season."

No crust, no must, no reason to wait for laundry dayโ€ฆ Weโ€™re not exactly advocating for you to completely stop washing your socks, but if you donโ€™t wash them after every wear, youโ€™ll be alright. Heck, some people have taken it on as a personal mission and the record of most-days-worn-without-washing continues to increase to this day.

We Want Your Stories

We canโ€™t get enough stories from you, the Darn Tough community.

The beauty is that many of the stories we receive are part of warranty claims, meaning youโ€™ve loved our socks so much that you wore them out (or worse) and are reaching out for another pair.

So, if you write us a letter, just know weโ€™ll all read it, post it on our walls, recite it aloud to each other in funny accentsโ€ฆ Weโ€™re grateful for every one. Keep them coming.
