When I was fortunate enough to become a mom, my mind swelled with joy and the I can’t wait for’s. The first giggle. The first word. The first steps. But what I wasn’t prepared for were the 'Darn Its' – and boy are they easy to come by.

Turns out that I wasn’t the only one at Darn Tough with plenty of those Mom 'Darn It.' moments. So, as you settle in to celebrate a mother in your life this year, also take time to reflect on all the ‘Darn It.’ moments she has handled.

Cleanup at 20 Thousand Feet

“My 'what do we do now?!' moment happened during a family vacation we’d planned, flying from BTV to JFK and then on to SLC. On our first flight, everything was going smoothy. But when we began descending, I noticed my 8-year-old suddenly start throwing up all over herself. Thankfully, this plane still had the throw up bags in the seat backs, so I got one to her quickly. With no kids in diapers anymore, I immediately regretted not packing any wipes. A nearby mom kindly handed me some, and when I flagged down the flight attendant for help, they calmly reassured me that this happens all the time.

"We landed and made our way to the bathroom, and that’s when I felt like mom of the year;  we had packed one change of clothes in our carry-ons, so my daughter had a full outfit ready to go, plus a bag to contain the messy clothes.

"When we came out of the bathroom, I looked at my husband and asked, 'What do we do now? Do we get on the five-hour flight to SLC or do we go home?' We managed to find children’s Dramamine, got on the next flight, and made it to SLC with no further drama.

TL;DR: My youngest son puked on an airplane. I had an extra outfit for him...but not for me. Darn It!" – Kate C.

Fur Real?!

“As a new mom, I was deep in newborn brain fog, and I accidentally poured my dog’s food directly into the trash can instead of his bowl. He watched me with surprise and disappointment, and I felt like a terrible (dog) mom.” – Sarah D.

“I caught my son scooping water out of our dog’s bowl. And drinking it.” – Kathryn D.

Mom Pro Tip:

Elevated dog dishes and extra treats for your very patient pup.

Baby it’s Cold Outside

“I was on a winter hike with my baby who had just started solids and he had an extra stinky blowout. We ran to the car for an emergency diaper change, and found that the packet of wipes in the trunk was frozen solid.” – Kate A.

Mom Pro Tip:

Put a few wipes in a plastic bag and tuck them inside your sock while hiking. They’ll stay put and won’t freeze.

Sock Pick:

Light Hiker Boot sock a nice, tall height to keep your stash of wipes in.

Thank You. Darn It.

Even with the vomit, unexpected evacuations and brain fog, being a Mom is truly an honor. Whether you are a mom to humans, animals, a special Aunt or Guardian – thank you. We salute you! You deserve a new pair of socks…and maybe some chocolate too. Happy Mothers Day.
